The Importance of Traditionally Feminine, Empowered Women in Media

7/30/2022

While it isn’t practical to keep eyeliner and hair on point while going on a quest, I want to see more female characters that see their reflection and love the way their hair, their face, and their body looks. It would go a long way to present girls with characters such as this from an early age, instead of the protagonist who has never paid much attention to her physical appearance or thought of herself as beautiful.

When it comes to YA, feminine traits are often seen as flaws. If a female character takes care of her appearance she is vain. Or worse, she is sexualized —I’m looking at you superhero franchises—. And the matter goes well beyond physical appearance. If she is graceful and kind she is often portrayed as weak.  Characters that start their journey with these traits are commonly forced to change them during the course of the story. Transform them into traditionally masculine traits, to prove that they are strong and independent. See the problem?

Beautiful World, Where Are You and Adult Coming of Age

7/28/2022

Beautiful World, Where Are You is Sally Rooney’s third and most recent novel. It follows four different characters throughout a portion of their lives. Alice, Eileen, Simon and Felix all have difficult and overlapping relationships with one another. The book kicks off when Alice meets Felix on a dating app and then invites him on a trip to Rome with her. The book then follows all four of the characters, as they come to terms with their adult coming of age.

8 Queer Graphic Novels You Need to Read

7/27/2022

If you’re looking for a feel-good, tearjerker graphic novel, read on.

1. Nimona
Nimona is by ND Stevenson, the mastermind behind She-Ra. It follows Nimona, a shapeshifter who joins the villain Ballister Blackheart to overthrow an organization called The Institute and defeat their champion, Ambrosius Goldenloin. What starts as a lighthearted story about an overzealous girl and a villain with a code of ethics quickly turns into an exploration of flawed characters and complex relationships. Making me laugh out loud and cry, Nimona is one of the sweetest, most poignant works I have read.

Focus on Format: Limericks

7/25/2022

Some famous poetic formats herald a champion – a writer of old who produced a plethora of the poems and became renowned for them. The most famous example is probably William Shakespeare and the sonnet. But what Shakespeare is for sonnets, Edward Lear is for limericks.

The limerick’s origins are surprisingly mysterious. There’s no definitive documentation for when they started being written, although scholars discovered verses with similar styles dating back to the 11th century. We do know that limericks originated in England. Some of Shakespeare’s plays actually feature a few, including Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest.

The Great Gatsby Review

7/25/2022

  1. Review by Valerie Caballero
Love always adds an extra level of difficulty to our lives, as wells , impossible loves, young people, thousands of possibilities. And with Gatsby we find the story of a dramatic love, an old sport.

Gatsby's story is quite complicated. A class man, who lives in a large mansion, a person full of secrets and with thousands of regrets from his past and younger life, which he now tries to placate through parties in the gossiping societies where he shares with people he knows and others that he had never seen in his life. A true lover of literature and sports as much as the old school, a person with whom it is very easy to identify because of the characteristics that he presents while the story unfolds, the ambition, the loneliness that sometimes surrounded him, in addition to the memories that sometimes tormented him, reminding him of a past life that he already left behind and that now it is trying to overcome as a way to make a difference.

Anne of Green Gables Review

7/24/2022

1. Review by Ezann Kuai

Delightfully satisfying, Anne of Green Gables is a heartwarming feel-good book.

We follow the journey of an orphan, Anne Shirley, as she is raised by the Cuthberts. Her fierce love for the world and life is sure to charm you, just as she has captivated the people in town. Although she makes mistakes, she tries her best to improve, becoming the lovable character that she is. Witnessing her mature into a better person (while getting up to a lot of mischief on the way) was gratifying. It is evident her childhood before Green Gables shaped her insecurities, and it made her subsequent development in overcoming these shortcomings ever the more impactful.

Fanfiction 101: What is a canon-compliant fanfic?

7/24/2022

This article is part of a series, if you haven’t read the rest start with “Fanfiction 101: Where to read and post”.

Aren’t they just a copy of the work of the fandom you are writing for?

Canon compliant fics are fics that are extensions of the canon universe ( canon is the material accepted as part of the story in an individual universe of that story. It is often contrasted with, or used as the basis for, works of fan fiction).  There are no deviations in setting, times, characters or events that have taken place in the accepted world. (@everlarkficquestions on tumblr).

Other definitions can be works that do not contradict the events of the source (s) story and fanfics that could be part of the canon itself (which is my own interpretation of this genre).
