Chupacabra

by Byron López Ellington

Goat-sucker, they call me
They define me by the nutrients I seek
Goat-sucker, they scorn me
They fear me for they are weak
They sell their stock to make a living
Stock for money for drink and bread
I kill their stock to make a living
Stock for blood for life ahead
Chupacabra, they warn of me in the dark
Chupacabra, their eyes are open and their voices stark
Chupacabra, they tell their children to be in fear
Chupacabra, when I have never once gone near
What right have they to the blood,
While I am starving in the mud?
Separate species with opposing aims
Our goals are different but our motives the same:
Eat
Survive
Live
Thrive
Yet still they call me el chupacabra
At night they light their candelabra
To scare me off from my anxious feast--
They hope to kill this hungry beast.
Byron López Ellington is a high school writer primarily focused on fantasy novels, but also has a great love of poetry and other forms. He is the founder and editor of the upcoming literary magazine Rulerless (rulerless.org). You can find his work at byronlopezellington.com.
